Wayne Rooney’s odds of becoming Leicester’s next manager revealed after overnight twist

Wayne Rooney has been out of a job since he was fired by Plymouth Argyle in the 2025-26 campaign.

Since then, the former Man United star has opted to go into punditry rather than explore an immediate return to the dugout.

Nevertheless, this has not stopped the 40-year-old from being linked to different jobs.

Recently, Rooney was placed on the bookies’ odds to take over at Aberdeen.

Now, this has transpired once again, with Leicester City on the hunt for Marti Cifuentes’ replacement.

Wayne Rooney 25/1 to become next Leicester City manager

Leicester have been linked to multiple managers over the course of the past week.

Early on, Chris Coleman emerged as an early frontrunner at the Foxes, despite not managing in the Championship since 2018, when he was at Sunderland.

However, there has now been further complications in their hunt, with Leicester City now having a six-point deduction in a new twist.

As a result, the Foxes are pretty much out of the race for the playoffs and are now in a battle for survival.

With Leicester on the hunt for a manager who can keep them from dropping into League One, one bookmaker believes Rooney has an outside chance of getting the job.

Currently, he is 25/1 to be in the Foxes dugout next, as they search for Cifuentes’ successor.

Could Rooney be a success at Leicester?

Unfortunately, if Leicester did decide to take a gamble on Rooney, all the signs point to it being a failure.

Despite earning some credit after overseeing Derby’s relegation, he was unable to kick-start his managerial career from here.

A failed spell at DC United saw him back in the Championship at Birmingham City, where he lasted just 15 matches, winning two.

From here, he was given a chance at Plymouth, where he only achieved five wins in 25 matches before he was once again dismissed.

However, perhaps the most worrying thing about both of these clubs is the fact that they both went on to be relegated after Rooney’s time there.

Therefore, Leicester simply cannot appoint Rooney, or they could end up becoming just the fifth team in history to suffer back-to-back relegations from the Premier League to League One.
