‘We will miss you’ – Cody Gakpo issues heartfelt goodbye to Luis Diaz
Cody Gakpo has sent an emotional message to Luis Diaz as the Colombian leaves Liverpool for Bayern Munich.
Winger Diaz has agreed a £65.5million (Sky Sports) move to Bayern Munich as the attacker switches Merseyside for Bavaria.
The 28-year-old enjoyed three-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and the EFL Cup on two occasions.
Having joined from FC Porto, the Colombian became a key player for both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, scoring 29 times in 103 appearances in the English top-flight (Premier League).
He will be sorely missed at Anfield after establishing himself as a dependable player for the Reds as he embarks on a new career path in Germany.
Cody Gakpo braces to play without Diaz
Taking to Instagram stories (30 July), the Dutchman shared some moving photos of him alongside the Colombian during their time together with the Reds.
One of the photos, captioned: “We will miss you hermano [brother]”, featured a whole host of Liverpool players as Gakpo took a selfie with Diaz.

A separate post depicted the pair side-by-side on the pitch at Anfield with the caption: “Good luck on your next journey.”

Increased pressure on Gakpo’s shoulders
Football Insider verdict
Potentially, the funds from the sale of the Colombian will go towards bringing in Alexander Isak from Newcastle after the Swede “has already reached a verbal agreement in principle with Liverpool over a contract running until 2031” according to Florian Plettenberg (30 July).
However, whilst a deal continues to be struck for the number 14, Diaz’s departure opens up an immense opportunity for Gakpo.
The Dutchman now has no competition down the left flank, suggesting the number 18 will be tasked with providing the main threat down that side.
| Cody Gakpo | Luis Diaz | |
| Appearances | 49 | 50 |
| Minutes played | 2701 | 3336 |
| Goals | 18 | 17 |
| Assists | 6 | 5 |
The 26-year-old enjoyed a solid season last year, notching 18 goals and six assists in all competitions.
Importantly, his tendency to cut inside onto his right-foot should favour new left-back Milos Kerkez who will bomb down the wing to deliver balls into the box.
The Hungary international provided an assist on five occasions for Bournemouth last season and Reds fans can expect a similar or better output in his debut season.
Yet, for Gakpo, if Sporting Director Richard Hughes doesn’t bring in another left-winger, the ex-PSV star must stay consistent in the upcoming campaign.
