Noel Whelan has insisted that Leeds United should get rid of “fragile” Samuel Saiz permanently this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward ripped into the playmaker following the end of his half-season loan at La Liga club Getafe.
Saiz abruptly quit Leeds in mid-December to return to his Spanish homeland and sign a loan-to-buy deal with the La Liga club that the Yorkshire Post report is worth £6million.
However, the 28-year-old has been on the fringes at Getafe, they have not chosen to trigger their permanent option he and is heading back to his parent club following the end of the Spanish season.
“Leeds need to get him off the wage bill and free up money to go towards another playmaker” Whelan exclusively told Football Insider. “You look at people’s character before you look at how good they are, and Saiz is weak, fragile and was a disgrace at Leeds.
“He had certain problems with his family and wanted to be back in Spain. You can’t have players at your club who don’t want to be there, and who are wanting to leave.
“Saiz said himself he was not putting in the effort at the end of last season. That says he has a weak mind and a weak character. Think of all the Leeds fans working five, six days a week to save up to watch their team.
“For a player to say he didn’t put 100 per cent in, that’s shocking and disrespectful. As for the spitting incident, straight away that should have been a sackable offence. It was disgusting.”
Saiz was a mainstay of the Leeds team for the 18 months after signing from Spanish outfit Huesca in the summer of 2017 for a fee of around £3million.
He has made 58 appearances for United and has a contract that runs until the summer of 2021.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the future of a key Whites player is massively in doubt after a “falling-out” with Bielsa behind the scenes.
