‘Welcome back’ – Man City’s Manuel Akanji reacts excitedly after midfield signing agreed

Man City defender Manuel Akanji shared an excited response after a midfielder transfer was confirmed for one his teammates.

Pep Guardiola’s side endured a rare trophyless season for the first time in eight years last term, finishing third in the Premier League and falling short in multiple competitions.

They had the chance to bounce back with success at the Club World Cup this summer, but Man City were stunned by Al-Hilal in the round of 16, cutting their campaign short in disappointing fashion.

Despite the team’s struggles, Akanji remained a consistent figure for Man City at the back, delivering composed and commanding displays across the season.

The Swiss international made 40 appearances in all competitions last term, proving to be a key part of Guardiola’s plans ahead of a summer reset and renewed push for silverware next season.

Now, the 30-year-old has posted a public reaction after the confirmation of a transfer involving his Switzerland teammate, marking a moment of support as both players prepare for major campaigns at club and international level.

Xhaka previously spent seven years at Arsenal between 2016 and 2023, where he lifted two FA Cups before leaving for Bayer Leverkusen.

His time in Germany has been hugely successful. Under Xabi Alonso, Xhaka played a key role in an invincible Bundesliga-winning campaign during his debut season and made 49 appearances across all competitions last term.

The signing of the Switzerland international signals Sunderland’s continued ambition this summer. Sunderland have already secured the permanent signings of Simon Adingra, Habib Diarra and Enzo Le Fee, with Xhaka now joining a growing list of high-profile arrivals.

Celtic agree deal for Man City’s Jahmai Simpson-Pusey

While Akanji celebrates a national teammate’s return to the Premier League, City are set to part ways with one of their rising stars in defence.

Football Insider revealed Celtic have agreed to sign Man City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey on a loan deal.

The England Under-18 international had a memorable season last term as made his senior debut for City, but is now set to seek regular first-team football under Brendan Rodgers at Parkhead.
