'Outstanding' - Exclusive: Paul Robinson blown away by Ibrox youth product
Paul Robinson was in awe of Rangers academy product Billy Gilmour after his “outstanding” man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool on Tuesday night.
The former England international goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed the 18-year-old showed an “old head on young shoulders” for Chelsea in their FA Cup victory.
Gilmour earned plaudits for his display as Frank Lampard’s side beat the Premier League leaders 2-0 in the fifth round of the competition.
The teenager spent eight years in the Gers academy between 2009 and 2017 before moving to Stamford Bridge, despite the best efforts of then manager Pedro Caixinha.
When asked for his assessment of the Scotland under-21 international, Robinson told Football Insider: “He is only 18. To be given that responsibility it shows the faith Frank Lampard has in him.
“I thought he was outstanding and played very well. He looks to have an old head on young shoulders. He handled the situation very well. Playing as a central midfielder, for such a big team on such a big occasion, it is a big game to come into and he was outstanding.

“It is even better news for Scotland. They have some young Scottish talent coming through and he could get a call-up in the near future if he continues to perform like that.”
The victory was Gilmour’s sixth appearance for The Pensioners this season having predominantly featured in the domestic cup competitions.
The central-midfielder may well be in Steve Clarke’s plans when Scotland face Israel on March 26 in the semi-final of the Euro 2020 play-offs.
