'Well played Moyes' - Exclusive: Bent in awe of West Ham 'Star in the making'

Darren Bent has heralded David Moyes for his role in helping Declan Rice become a “star in the making” for West Ham and England.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, has suggested the 21-year-old enforcer could lift his game to new heights among better players but insisted it was credit to the Irons they have managed to keep him on board.

Rice, who is now a mainstay among the starting XI for both club and country, was in demand over the summer transfer window, most notable from London rivals Chelsea.

He has carried his impressive form from previous seasons into the current campaign and has been an ever-present in the Premier League for the Irons.

Bent has lauded West Ham for managing to keep him on board but suggested he could easily step up a level.

Bent told Football Insider: “He’s a player I’m a really big fan of, Declan Rice. I really like him, I think he’s got bags and bags of ability.

“Even if you put him in a better team, I think he’s one of those players when you play him around better players, his natural performance will elevate as well. I really like him.

“For West Ham to have still hung onto him, you’ve got to say well played David Moyes for hanging on to him because he’s a star in the making.

“These young English players, it’s quite crazy when you really think about it, he had the option of going to Ireland, chose England, Grealish had the whole Republic of Ireland situation, he chose England.

“I think if you asked these two guys and everybody around them, they’d definitely say they’ve made the best decision because they’ve arguably become some of England’s main men.”

In other West Ham news, Danny Mills has been left stunned by what Moyes has said about Rice.
