Wenger gives transfer update, Arsenal fans will be enraged

By Joe Nelson

Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is only looking to bring in one more summer addition in a transfer update that is likely to enrage Arsenal supporters.

The Gunners manager claimed on Friday ahead of his team’s Premier League opener against Liverpool on Sunday that the only position he is targeting is now centre-back.

“I am looking at no other areas apart from centre back, it’s about quality,” Wenger said, as quoted by the Mirror live press conference blog.

The 66-year-old’s update comes just a week after he claimed Arsenal were looking for reinforcements in both defence and attack, where Olivier Giroud is the only fit and authentic senior striker at the club.

Arsenal fans will be enraged by the apparent U-turn from Wenger, who has a history of being cautious in the transfer market and reluctant to make too many adjustments to his playing squad.

“Today my focus is not too much on transfers because we have an important game in 48 hours and to win this game, transfers won’t help us because we have a strong squad and have to deal with the game,” Wenger added to the Mirror.

“We have lost three centre backs because Laurent Koscielny is also not ready and out of the game but I believe we are equipped to do well.”

It has been widely reported that Arsenal are in negotiations to sign Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia but the long-standing Gunners manager refused to be drawn on the player.

“I cannot tell you – “transfer wise, as soon as we do something we will inform you.”

Wenger is expected to partner now-boy Rob Holding at the heart of the defence on Sunday, alongside England under 21 international Calum Chambers and despite his lack of experience, Wenger is confident he can do a good job for the North London outfit.

“He has played in the Championship so that is a good experience, to deal with one level higher.”

In other Arsenal transfer news, the Gunners have another bid rejected in their search for a new centre back signing.
