West Brom tipped to make Johnstone U-turn amid Athletic reveal - Mills

Danny Mills has tipped Sam Johnstone to see out the final year of his West Brom contract in the Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender insisted it is “vitally important” the Albion start their season strongly tonight (6 August).

New Baggies boss Valérien Ismaël revealed when he took over in July that he expected both Johnstone and Matheus Pereira.

West Brom announced today that Pereira has joined Saudi Professional League side Al Hilal.

Meanwhile, the Athletic reported on 4 August the Albion are planning on offering Johnstone a new deal.

It is claimed it could include a release clause if the club fail to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Asked whether he expects Johnstone to stay at the Hawthorns for the new season, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Yes, why not?

“It all depends on results. They need to get off to a good start and get the ball rolling.

“If you’re doing well and being successful then teams will keep an eye on you. Also, you’re doing well for yourself. If you get promoted, you might get a better job when it comes to moving on.

“It’s vitally important that West Brom get off to a good start.”

West Brom begin life back in the Championship with a trip to AFC Bournemouth tonight.

Despite losing Pereira, the Midlands outfit have strengthened their squad with the signings of Alex Mowatt and Adam Reach.

In other news, West Brom and Nottingham Forest are racing to sign a Belgium-based star on a free transfer.
