Agbonlahor verdict on Diop after West Ham green light exit

Issa Diop can revive his West Ham career and spark a David Moyes U-turn after his goalscoring comeback against Sheffield United.

That is according to ex-Premier League goalscorer Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 24-year-old centre-back scored a glancing header in just his fourth league start this season.

Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Fabian Balbuena have all been ahead of Diop in David Moyes’ pecking order in the 2020-21 campaign.

It looked like his time at the London Stadium could have been over in January after Football Insider revealed that manager David Moyes had given him the green light to leave.

But Agbonlahor claims that Diop — who came into the side in place of the injured Ogbonna — has the necessary quality to turn his Hammers career around.

“Sometimes, you just need a run of games,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“If he gets that, I see no reason why he can’t revive his West Ham career between now and the end of the season.

“Obviously, we’ve seen him linked with moves elsewhere in the past.

“The way Ogbonna and Dawson have been playing, they’ve been so good that he hasn’t really had a chance.

“Now he just needs a few games to try and stay in the team. A goal is the best way to do that too. It’s hard for a manager to take a player out when he’s just scored a goal.”

The French defender’s goal against Sheffield United was his first for West Ham in 358 days.

With Ogbonna facing a length spell on the sidelines, West Ham fans will be hoping Diop can now step up and prove his quality.

In other news, West Ham owners David Gold and David Sullivan value the club at £600m amid interest from potential investors.
