‘West Ham are getting relegated’ – This is who is really to blame

West Ham have endured a dismal start to the season and are staring down the barrel of relegation despite still being in the early stages.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side lost 2-1 to Leeds last time out, furthering the concerns amongst supporters after losing to yet another newly-promoted side.

The Hammers have now plummeted to 19th in the league table, with just one win from nine games, and are already at risk of being cut adrift in the bottom three.

Nuno was appointed to replace Graham Potter last month, but has failed to win any of his first four games in charge and West Ham continue to sink down the table.

Despite some frustrations directed at the manager, though, fingers continue to be pointed at the board and the direction in which they have led the club.

West Ham board blamed for failings amid relegation verdict

Former Southampton striker Matt Le Tissier warned Football Insider on 27 October that West Ham look set for relegation and have not shown enough to prove otherwise.

Their continued failings in the transfer market, decisions surrounding managers and other backroom staff, and a general lack of direction, have all contributed to the situation.

That is according to former West Ham and Man United senior scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at his former clubs, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the owners are directly to blame for the mess at the London Stadium.

In my opinion, it all goes back to when they sacked David Moyes,” he told Football Insider.

“I said to a friend of mine at the time, West Ham are getting relegated within four years, and two years later look where we are now.

“After their games against Leeds and Brentford, they’re as poor an outfit as I’ve seen this season.

“There are issues there which have been clear since I was at the club, but nothing has been done about it.

“The midfielders never put challenges in, the centre-backs are always likely to make mistakes, they don’t know what their best full-back combination is, and they don’t have a reliable striker.

“They rely far too much on Jarrod Bowen, but there’s only so much he can do by himself.

“But I have to say, every issue West Ham have at the moment goes back to decisions made by the board, both recently and over the last few years.

“Going back to the decision to bring in Tim Steidten against Moyes’ wishes, and then he brought players in to the club on big money, who the manager didn’t want.

“Some of those players are still there, some are gone already, but the board decided to back this guy over the manager who was given them their most successful times in decades.

“They then decided to get rid of Moyes because they thought they could do better, and they’ve had three managers since then, none of whom have been good enough.

“Countless poor decisions have been made there, and that is the reason they’re in trouble, regardless of what any manager or players do this season.”

Brown is the latest to express his worries about the Hammers, with Jamie O’Hara also claiming West Ham are “sleepwalking into the Championship” amid growing concerns.

Brown told Football Insider on 23 September that West Ham’s board were at fault for Potter’s failings after undermining him and going behind his back.

Meanwhile, he warned that Nuno won’t last long at West Ham given his history of clashing with owners and the reasons behind his exit from Nottingham Forest.

This comes amid a backdrop of West Ham fans protesting against the board, as the supporters are making their concerns clear surrounding the club’s direction.

Questionable decisions were made throughout Moyes’ spell at the London Stadium, but became more apparent alongside the dismal results under Julen Lopetegui and Potter.

Now, despite Nuno being tasked with turning around their fortunes, there is a feeling that relegation is inevitable as a result of the decisions made from the top.
