West Ham backed to sign goalscoring midfielder after journalist’s Jesse Lingard update – Campbell

West Ham need to sign an attacking midfielder who can score goals this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Arsenal and Everton striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a Jesse Lingard-type player would take David Moyes’s side “to the next level.”

West Ham have been interested in re-signing Lingard on a free transfer this summer following the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

Man United

However, according to The Guardian‘s Jacob Steinberg (20 July), the ex-Man United player is in advanced talks to sign for newly-promoted club Nottingham Forest.

Steve Cooper’s side are said to have made an extremely lucrative offer to Lingard.

When asked by Football Insider if an attacking midfielder was a necessity at the London Stadium. Campbell said: “Yes, they still need an attacking midfielder for me.

“They have been interested in Lingard.

“An attacking midfielder who can get double figures over the course of the season would really change West Ham.

“It would take the pressure off [Michail] Antonio and [Jarrod] Bowen. They would not be relying on them so heavily if they have another goal threat.

“The midfield is the area for me. They need somebody who can break the lines and score goals.

West Ham

“Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek have been very good but to get to the next level West Ham need to score more goals. Soucek did it two seasons ago but he wasn’t as prolific last season.

“They tailed off at the end of the season. I think a goalscoring midfielder is what they need.”
