West Ham board make David Moyes U-turn – sources

West Ham changed their mind on handing David Moyes a contract extension earlier this year due to pressure from fan groups, sources have told Football Insider.

David Sullivan and the rest of the Hammers board had been ready to agree a two-year extension with Moyes at the turn over the year.

But talks have since stalled over a new deal amid growing unrest from supporters over the manager’s methods and the team’s playing style.

A big factor is believed to have been the negative feeling among some influential supporters’ groups, whose pressure has convinced the club’s hierarchy into pulling the plug on handing the Scotsman fresh terms at the London Stadium.

Football Insider revealed last week Moyes has privately told his friends that he “can’t win the fans over whatever I do” as the speculation around his future continues to ramp up.

The 61-year-old is now expected to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season barring what would be a hugely unexpected twist.

It’s been a difficult past few months for Moyes after results on the pitch have taken a downturn and talk around his future has increased.

The Hammers have won just four games since the turn of the year and were dumped out of Europe following their quarter-final defeat to Bayer Leverkusen on 18 April.

Although the 2-2 draw with Liverpool on 27 April was a positive result, the damaging 5-2 loss against Crystal Palace on 21 April led to a number of the club’s fans calling for his head.

West Ham are believed to be assessing the market for a successor, with reports emerging the club held talks with Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim last week.

There seems to be very little Moyes can do to persuade the board into extending his deal beyond this season as his days now appear to be numbered at the London Stadium.
