Exclusive: Kevin Phillips on West Ham summer signing plans after shock link
Kevin Phillips has insisted West Ham must set their sights on “quality” signings this summer to right the wrongs of last year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Premier League legend insisted David Moyes “cannot afford” to get transfers wrong in the upcoming window after a difficult campaign.
The Irons have been surprisingly linked with Borussia Dortmund playmaker and Germany World Cup hero Mario Gotze but Phillips has dismissed it as a move that would backfire.
He questioned Gotze’s conditioning and instead urged West Ham to focus on concentrating on a handful of prime players rather than just bulking up the numbers in their squad.
Phillips instead much will depend upon whether the London club are successful in avoiding relegation from the Premier League.
“I do not see [Gotze signing] happening,” Phillips told Football Insider. “There have been questions over him physically and West Ham cannot afford to get their signings wrong this summer.

“Whether they will be in the Premier League or not is another big factor. It is now about quality, not quantity.”
West Ham are 16th in the table but level on points with 18th-placed Bournemouth amid talks behind the scenes on completing the Premier League season.
The Hammers were the most active top-flight club in the January window.
They signed winger Jarrod Bowen from Hull City for £20million-plus, goalkeeper Darren Randolph back from Middlesbrough and midfielder Thomas Soucek on loan.
In other West Ham new, it can be REVEALED that the club are willing to let big name go for nothing after talks.
