‘West Ham chief in line for top job’ after new reveal – boardroom source
West Ham have been making efforts to increase their revenues as they look to compete with the top Premier League clubs financially.
The east London club have pinpointed their commercial income as an area for improvement as they look to cash in on opportunities at the London Stadium.
West Ham posted a record-breaking revenue last season after their turnover surged from £236.7million in 2022-23 to £269.8million.
That was aided by a £6.8million boost in commercial revenue, which rose to £41.9million in 2023-24.
The man spearheading the club’s commercial operations was Nathan Thompson, who was appointed as executive director at the London Stadium earlier this week.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted Thompson is now in line to be West Ham’s next managing director after making the step up to executive director.
Co-owners David Sullivan and Vanessa Gold are joint-chairs, while Karren Brady is vice-chair at the London Stadium.

West Ham reward chief after stunning financial reveal
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed West Ham have rewarded Thompson following his work as commercial director.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t know Nathan personally, but I’ve seen some of his work and he’s been very active in the sponsorship market.
“I think he’s done well. I think he’s increased revenue in the commercial side in some very innovative ways. I haven’t seen the actual numbers of some of the deals, but they’re certainly creative and I like the look of what he’s been trying to do.
“In terms of being an executive director, I think that obviously West Ham know that the increasing revenue is crucial.
“It’s important that they’ve rewarded his work by giving him a bigger voice at the big table, so I think that’s great.
“I think commercial directors are often overlooked, but if he’s got the right managerial sort of skills, then he should be going up to a higher level.
“West Ham have always had a managing director position rather than a chief executive and it seems that he would be in line for that right now.”
