West Ham expert fumes at what he’s ‘seen’ from Kurt Zouma – ‘What is he doing?’
West Ham United need a “much better” centre-back option than Kurt Zouma.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie slammed the Frenchman’s work rate in recent performances.
Zouma has been a mainstay for David Moyes’ side this season having started every game he has been available for in the Premier League.
However, he has frequently been criticised by pundits and the Hammers’ fanbase following poor defensive performances, including their 6-0 thrashing against Arsenal last month and their 5-0 defeat against Fulham in December.
He also looked suspect in their 1-0 Europa League defeat against Freiburg on Thursday (7 March) for failing to track Michael Gregoritsch for his close-range 80th-minute winner.
Kurt Zouma “doesn’t bring enough” to be West Ham captain
McAvennie was baffled that the 29-year-old is still the captain of the club and claimed he falls far short of previous Hammers who have worn the armband.
“I look at past West Ham captains and past centre-backs and just think Zouma doesn’t bring enough of that for me,” he told Football Insider.
“I thought he was a good player when he came, but he doesn’t look as if he runs enough for me, he’s a bit passive.
“I don’t know what he’s like during the week [in training], but from what I see, he’s not for me.
“I think we can get much better centre-halves than him.

“I liked Craig Dawson – a no-nonsense player that just came in and did the job.
“But with Zouma, sometimes I wonder what he’s doing and what on earth is happening.”
