Jonathan Calleri has revealed that a chat with Carlos Tevez has convinced him he can still be a big hit at West Ham.
Calleri has made a below-par start to life in east London, after joining the club on loan from Deportivo Maldonado in the summer.
From ten first-team appearances in all competitions, the 23-year-old has scored just one goal, in the victory over Middlesbrough on January 21.
However, after finally netting his first goal for the club and showing signs he can turn his West Ham career around, Calleri is now looking to push on and make a bigger impact in the English top-flight over the remainder of the season.
After struggling to adapt to English football, he admitted he sought advice from Argentina striker Carlos Tevez, who also began his Premier League career with West Ham.
From 29 appearances for the Hammers, Tevez scored seven goals; contributing to an overall tally of 84 goals from 202 Premier League appearances. But it took him 20 games before he netted his first West Ham goal.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Calleri added that he wanted to follow in the footsteps of the former Manchester United and Manchester City front man: “I spoke to Carlos Tevez. When he first arrived here at West Ham he was in a similar situation to what I’m in.
“He said it was hard for him at first, the coach changed, and there was a time when he wanted to leave but he stayed and turned the situation around.
“Obviously we’re not the same player. I believe Carlos Tevez is an absolutely fantastic player so I want to take his advice and follow in his footsteps.”
Slaven Bilic was expected to terminate Calleri’s loan spell in January after his disappointing start to life at the Olympic Stadium earned him ‘flop’ status.
However, having failed to land any of his intended striker targets last month, Calleri is set to remain at the club until the end of the season.
The same could not be said, however, for fellow flop Simone Zaza. The goalless Italian forward had his loan deal terminated, and he has since moved to Valencia.
In other West Ham news, the club have lined-up a Premier League title-winner if they lose this senior man in the summer.
