West Ham get green light to sack Julen Lopetegui – Stefan Borson

West Ham can afford to sack Julen Lopetegui but will need to “admit they have made a mistake”.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that the Irons have “more flexibility than almost anybody else” in terms of their finances and Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Lopetegui is coming under increased pressure from fans and pundits alike after West Ham’s dismal start to the 2024-25 campaign.

The Spaniard was only appointed in the off-season and is under contract until June 2026.

West Ham will need to give Lopetegui compensation if they are to part company with him and will also have to negotiate a deal with a new boss.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (18 November) that Jose Mourinho is “very interested” in the prospect of taking over.

Borson claimed the 2023 sale of Declan Rice is still contributing to the club’s good financial situation.

He told Football Insider: “West Ham can afford to make this change.

“From a financial perspective, they have a lot more flexibility than almost anybody else.

“The Rice sale gave them a lot of flexibility with PSR, which is why they spent so heavily in the summer.

“They’ve got plenty left over, even on the three-year test.

“West Ham are well run, they control their costs almost better than anyone else around.

“Compared with the other London clubs, they are doing very well – although they have been loss-making.

“They can handle the cost of making a change with Lopetegui, so that won’t be the key driver.

“It will be more just admitting they have made a mistake.”
