West Ham handed 'massive boost' after 'amazing' Antonio move pre-Man City - pundit

West Ham have been handed a “massive boost” against Manchester City after Michail Antonio was rested for the midweek win over Rapid Vienna.

That is according to former Leeds striker Noel Whelan who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, praised manager David Moyes for protecting the 31-year-old.

Antonio was left at home as the Hammers sealed a 2-0 victory in Austria on Thursday.

As quoted by the London Evening Standard (November 27th), Moyes admitted he rested the Jamaica international to try get him back to “top form”.

Whelan heaped praise on the Hammers boss for recognising the needs of his players.

He also hailed the other players for stepping up in Antonio’s absence.

“It’s a massive boost for West Ham – and credit to David Moyes for recognising that he needed that little bit of rest time,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s got a squad capable of doing just that, and they’ve put themselves in a great position to be resting players at this stage after their performances earlier in the season.

“You’re still getting the same attitude even when players like Antonio aren’t on the pitch. There’s a really honest attitude about that group.

They will go out there without certain players, put in the performances and get the job done.

“Moyes has built a really strong outfit, they’ve got an amazing culture – and that is hard to build.

“He’s got a group of players who would do anything to win a game of football.”

West Ham now face three games in the space of six days.

The first comes against Manchester City on Sunday.
