‘West Ham have made a big error’ as points deduction update emerges
West Ham secured a 14th-place finish in the Premier League this term with Graham Potter’s tenure getting off to a faltering start.
Football Insider has revealed (14 May) that West Ham are preparing for another big overhaul as club chiefs look to back the new Irons boss.
However, the London club could run into Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns – with top-flight clubs only allowed to lose £105million over three years.
Julen Lopetegui was backed heavily with around £120million of signings last summer (2024) but stars like Niclas Fullkrug, Crysencio Summerville and Luis Guilherme have failed to make an impact.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed West Ham will be “tight on PSR” as they plot their summer business.
Wyness shreds Fullkrug, Summerville and Guilherme deals
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed West Ham made a “big error” by failing to improve their squad with the £105million Arsenal paid them for Declan Rice in 2023.
If West Ham breach PSR, they could be hit with a potential points deduction – just as Everton and Nottingham Forest were in the 2023-24 campaign.
Wyness suggested even a rumoured takeover at West Ham will not bring more money into their transfer war chest this summer.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
12 | Crystal Palace (EL) | 38 | 53 | 0 |
13 | Everton | 38 | 48 | -2 |
14 | West Ham | 38 | 43 | -16 |
15 | Man United | 38 | 42 | -10 |
16 | Wolves | 38 | 42 | -15 |
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “West Ham are going to be tight on PSR.
“I don’t know what assets they will want to sell this summer.
“The Declan Rice money has come and gone now and that was the big error. They didn’t improve the club with that money.
“If a new owner comes in, it won’t make an impact in time for this summer.
“It could be a minority stake at first, which progresses into a full buyout in a stage-by-stage situation.”

West Ham race to land Southampton star
Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (23 May) that Aston Villa, West Ham and Leeds are eyeing moves for Southampton midfielder Matheus Fernandes.
The Saints face a losing fight to keep hold of Fernandes following relegation, with the club valuing him around £25million.
He joined from Sporting CP last summer (2024) and is under contract until June 2029.
