West Ham make final decision on Carlos Soler as Graham Potter plans after Newcastle

West Ham have reached a decision on turning Carlos Soler’s loan deal into a permanent one this summer, reports The Athletic.

The Spanish midfielder moved to East London in a busy summer transfer window, overseen by Tim Steidten who has since left West Ham.

Soler was recruited from PSG on-loan, following two underwhelming years in the French capital.

Since joining, the former Valencia man has been used in a variety of roles on the pitch, without properly establishing himself in the West Ham starting XI.

Soler came off the bench for the last 25 minutes in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle, failing to have any real impact in his cameo appearance.

West Ham reach final decision on Carlos Soler transfer

Strengthening West Ham’s midfield is a priority for Graham Potter this summer, but the club do not have any intentions of converting Soler’s loan into a permanent move, according to The Athletic.

The Spaniard has shown glimpses of his ability at times this season, but a return of one goal, and one assist in 23 matches has not been good enough.

Separately, West Ham are targeting a double-deal for Angel Gomes and Jonathan David from Lille, with both attacking players being available on free transfers in the summer.

West Ham have been made aware of Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ asking price, with the former Man City defender on the club’s radar from Southampton, Pete O’Rourke exclusively told Football Insider.

Football Insider Verdict

Prior to the start of the season, West Ham were entering a new era, with Julen Lopetegui and nine new senior players set to build on the success’ of the David Moyes era.

With an expenditure of over £120million [transfermarkt], it was a serious outlay, as the club signalled their intent to challenge for European qualification.

However, the scattergun approach of signing lots of players with little resale value has failed to pay off.

Of the nine players signed, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been the standout, and the former Man United man should have better assist numbers this season, but the lack of a proper goal-getting striker is costing the Irons.

Niclas Fullkrug was signed for £27million [BBC Sport], but the German has barely featured due to injury, his short-term replacement, Evan Ferguson, as also yet to get on the scoresheet for his new club.
