West Ham news: Pundit 'surprised' as controversial Michail Antonio footage analysed

Paul Robinson is “surprised” the officials chose to overturn the penalty awarded to West Ham striker Michail Antonio against Crystal Palace.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one feared VAR would stick with the on-field decision in light of events this season.

As shown on Sky Sports (6 November), Antonio went to ground upon contact from Marc Guehi in the second half of West Ham’s 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Referee Paul Tierney, who had a good view of the incident, pointed to the spot at the London Stadium.

However, on the advice of VAR official Michael Salisbury, Tierney consulted the pitch-side monitor and overturned his decision.

When asked by Football Insider if the officials were right to overturn the spot-kick at the London Stadium, Robinson said: “It would have been a soft one.

“There was minimal contact really and certainly not enough to send a player like Antonio to the ground.

“That being said, I was surprised to see the decision overturned. We are seeing VAR interfere less and less this season.

“I feared they would stick with the on-field decision after it was initially given. They came to the right decision in the end though.”

West Ham dropped to 15th in the Premier League table following the loss.

Next up for David Moyes’s side is an EFL Cup tie against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday (9 November).

In other news, a source has revealed West Ham are lining up a January move for a Championship star after development.
