Kieran Maguire issues ‘furious’ West Ham fans claim amid new legal controversy

West Ham fans have every right to be “furious” about the sky-high food and drink prices at the London Stadium – and the club deserves credit for fighting back against the landlords on their behalf.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about one of the few downsides to the Hammers’ rental agreement at the 62,500-seater venue.

Images of the club’s new price list for refreshments at the London Stadium circled on social media after the first home game of 2022-23, with the cheapest pint of lager costing £7.30.

Prices were slightly scaled down in response to the backlash from fans, but the majority remain unhappy with what they consider to be extortionate charges.

The Athletic reported last Friday (19 August) that the Irons have threatened to take legal action against the London Stadium landlords if prices are not lowered.

Maguire sided with the supporters and saluted the club for doing the same.

“West Ham have got a brilliant deal in respect of the subsidised stadium,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“But they are very much tenants. It is not perceived as their stadium 365 days per year. They are not able to control certain elements, and catering is one.

“At the same time, you have to give credit to West Ham. They could have just shrugged their shoulders and said it was nothing to do with them.

“But they have seen the degree of fury from fans. That will be amplified given their start to the season.

“I think the agreement they had was that prices should be no more than the average of the four biggest clubs in London.”
