West Ham are set to renew their interest in Chelsea outcast Michy Batshuayi this summer, according to a club expert.
Hammers insider Ken Dyer reported in the Evening Standard on Monday that the London club were set to approach their Premier League rivals over a potential loan deal in the summer.
Dyer, who has been covering the club for over 40 years, revealed that West Ham were also weighing up an incredible £30million move for Jack Wilshere.
But the reported interest in Batshuayi comes as little surprise with the Hammers desperate to end their prolonged pursuit for a proven goalscorer.
Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho have both spent large parts of the season on the sidelines with injury, leaving Slaven Bilic short of options in attack.
Ashley Fletcher is inexperienced, while loan flop Jonathan Calleri has been unconvincing. Simone Zaza, meanwhile, has already quit club following a disastrous loan spell.
West Ham had attempted to sign Batshuayi from Marseille in the summer, with Sky Sports reporting they had made an offer of just under £30million for his services.
However, the 23-year-old striker later sealed a £32million move to London rivals Chelsea, where he has seen first team opportunities limited.
The Belgium international has yet to start a Premier League game for Chelsea this term, despite having made as many as 17 appearances in the competition.
But from his five starts in domestic cup competitions he has scored four goals, and Bilic is keen to offer him a way out ahead of next season.
Football Insider verdict
A loan move for Batshuayi could be the perfect solution to West Ham’s ongoing woes. Carroll can score important goals, but he is not a prolific goalscorer, while is injury proneness is also a major concern. Although valued at a huge £32million, West Ham would be more attracted to the lower-cost, loan option; but they may be all the need given he could be readily available in the summer. The club wasted considerable time in January pursuing targets that were not going to be let go by their clubs, but Batshuayi’s lack of regular action could make him an easy steal.
