Kieran Maguire slams West Ham after 'embarrassing' behind-the-scenes blunder exposed by BBC

Someone behind the scene at West Ham has “dropped the ball” with an “embarrassing” corporate blunder.

So says finance boffin Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the gambling sponsorship-related mishap.

BBC Sport reported on 4 November that West Ham were one of several clubs that had links to betting sites on the children’s pages of their websites.

Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa, QPR, Millwall and Reading also had links, but West Ham were the last to remove them amid the media storm.

US-based bookmaker Betway has been the Hammers’ chief sponsor since 2019 and their logo will feature on the front of their shirts until 2025.

Gambling sponsorship has come under heavy scrutiny in recent times and is the subject of an ongoing government review.

Maguire claimed that the Irons are simply guilty of complacency in this instance.

“This is sloppiness rather than malevolence,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“This comes at a time when the gambling industry is under a lot of criticism for a number of exploitative practices.

“Having a link on the children’s section is poor business practice from West Ham, but that’s all there is to it, in my eyes.

“If somebody had put two and two together, they would have removed the link before it was brought to the media’s attention.

“It’s embarrassing for them. Somebody here has just dropped the ball, and that’s about as far it goes.”
