Medical expert: Issa Diop’s season may be over as West Ham confirm ‘ligament damage’

Issa Diop may not play again this season as the defensive injury crisis continues at West Ham.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Diop, 25, picked up an ankle injury in the closing throes of the Hammers’ 1-1 draw with Burnley last Sunday (17 April).

The Guardian reported on Tuesday (19 April) that the French centre-back could be ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

West Ham are still fighting for a top-six spot in the Premier League and have reached the semi-finals in a historic Europa League campaign.

But Angelo Ogbonna is out for the season and there are fears that a new ankle injury could now see Kurt Zouma suffer the same fate.

And Dinnery fears that Diop’s damaged ankle ligaments could mean that the Irons will also be without him for the remainder of the campaign.

“The early indications are that this one is on the higher side in terms of severity,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“He has suffered ligament damage. It’s a setback and my understanding is that he may not play again this season.

“That leaves West Ham very short in defence in terms of experienced centre-backs. Ogbonna and Zouma are out as well, so it doesn’t look good.”

Diop has registered one goal and two assists in 26 appearances this season.

Craig Dawson is now the Irons’ only fit and available senior centre-back.
