‘I definitely want to be here’ – West Ham setback as PL ace wanted by Moyes makes statement
West Ham United have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, after the 25-year-old expressed his desire to remain at the Emirates Stadium.
A number of national media outlets, including Sky Sports, quoted manager David Moyes as saying he would “have to look at” the player if he was made available in January.
That doesn’t look like being the case now.
Wilshere has made 15 appearances for Arsenal this season since recovering from a long-term injury at the start of August and has six months left on his contract with the club.
However, the playmaker is in no doubt he wants to remain at Arsenal and is confident he can reach an agreement with the club over a new contract in the coming weeks.
“I definitely want to be here,” Wilshere told Sky Sports.
“I’m enjoying my football and I love playing in the Premier League now and I want to help Arsenal get to where they should be.
“We just have to sort things out and I’m sure that will happen in the next couple of weeks and it will be sorted.”
Moyes is an admirer of the player and expressed an interest in signing him at his pre-match press conference ahead of the goalless draw between the two clubs in the Premier League last week.
Football Insider verdict:
There is no doubt Wilshere would have been a great signing for West Ham and a move to the London Stadium would have made sense for both the club and the player. However, Wilshere has now started Arsenal’s last two Premier League games and was not in the squad for the EFL Cup quarter-final against the Hammers last night, which suggests Arsene Wenger could be offering him a route back into the first-team. Though the 25-year-old has struggled with injuries throughout his time with the Gunners, he still has what it takes to be a successful player at this level and demonstrated that with his performance against the Hammers last week. David Moyes is clearly a long-term admirer of the player, but as Wilshere wants to stay at Arsenal, the West Ham boss should turn his attentions elsewhere. He will probably me more focused on strengthening his squad in other areas, such as attack, as his side are among the lowest scorers in the Premier League.
