Noel Whelan has tipped West Ham to launch a summer bid for Manchester United loanee Jesse Lingard.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker heaped praise on the 27-year-old and suggested his current performances could earn him a recall to the England squad.
Lingard scored his third goal for West Ham in their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as they climbed into the top four.
He moved to the London Stadium on loan until the end of the season on deadline day earlier this month.
After not appearing in the Premier League all season for Man United, Lingard has now scored three goals in just four appearances for the Hammers.
Asked whether West Ham will try and secure his services on a permanent basis, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “Yes, he’s brought energy and excitement.
“He has a smile on his face which you can see when he’s scoring goals with his celebrations.
“He’s enjoying life, he’s back playing regularly and it looks like he’s found himself a nice little fit at West Ham.
“We’ve seen many players come from abroad and try and hit the ground running and not managed it. He’s done it that kid. From the very first game he played where he scored two.
“He’s looking like a real asset to them now. He has that defensive quality but he loves getting forward, he’s always forward-thinking.
“He can create, he can see the pass and he’s got an eye for a goal. He’s really pushing himself back into the England conversation with the performances he’s putting it in.”
