West Ham tipped to sign ‘another Dawson’ after source’s £12m reveal – Mills

West Ham will move for a defender in the “Craig Dawson” mould in January, according to Danny Mills.

The former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted David Moyes will be searching for a “consistent” centre-half to remedy the Hammers’ injury problems.

As quoted by football.london (8 December), the 58-year-old West Ham boss said he will consider looking for a new defender in the January window.

A Hammers source told Football Insider last month (29 November) that Liverpool defender Nathaniel Phillips is on their list of January centre-back targets, with a deal possible for around £12million.

However, Mills does not believe the English defender is the answer to the Irons’ problems.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s a young unknown, so I imagine David Moyes will want to go for the other end of the market and get some experience in.

“Nat Phillips may well be brilliant one week, and not so good the next. Moyes will want someone who is going to be consistent and put in that 6.5, 7/10 performance every week.

“If I was a West Ham fan, I’d have complete faith in the manager to pick the right player – especially in that area of the field.

“I think he’ll go for someone in that Craig Dawson mould. I can see it being someone over the age of 30 who isn’t playing every week.”

Kurt Zouma joined Angelo Ogbonna on the West Ham treatment table this week.

The Frenchman is reportedly set to miss between six and 12 weeks of action.
