‘West Ham to sell Edson Alvarez after eight-figure transfer update’

West Ham supporters have become increasingly frustrated by Edson Alvarez’s performances this season and now look likely to see the back of him in the summer.

The Mexican, alongside new signing Guido Rodriguez, failed to maintain any consistency under Julen Lopetegui, with Graham Potter still struggling to work out his best starting XI.

The Hammers were well on their way to securing all three points against Everton last time out, at least until Konstantinos Mavropanos messed up for West Ham in added time, seeing the game end 1-1.

With Tomas Soucek, James Ward-Prowse and Lucas Paqueta starting in the middle of the park, both Alvarez and Rodriguez were overlooked, and only the latter came on as a late substitute at Goodison Park.

Potter clearly has little to no trust for the 27-year-old, who has only started 18 of the Irons’ 29 league matches this season, leaving many fans wishing the club acted during the winter transfer window.

West Ham missed chance to offload Edson Alvarez to Monaco

Football Insider revealed in January that West Ham would not consider loan offers for Alvarez, having rebuffed a move from Ligue 1 giants Monaco during the window.

Without Alvarez, Rodriguez becomes Potter’s only real choice at defensive midfield, and with the Argentine doing little to gain belief in East London, that does not seem like an ideal option.

Alvarez has never been able to live up to the hype after arriving on a £35.4m deal from Ajax during the summer of 2023 [Sky Sports], and the continuous frustrations around his displays could mean an early exit.

That is exactly why Hammers fans are desperate to see their new manager, working with Kyle Macaulay, sign an exciting, new, no-nonsense midfielder during the summer transfer window.

Ezechiel Banzuzi on the radar at the London Stadium

Now, according to The Standard [20 March], the Hammers are among a host of top clubs targeting a move for OH Leuven’s Ezechiel Banzuzi, with a £12.6million fee placed on the youngster.

The East London side attempted to sign the 20-year-old talent during the winter transfer window, but despite entering into negotiations with the Belgian side, an agreement could not be reached.

There are absolutely no doubts over the Dutchman’s abilities with the ball at his feet, notching two goals and five assists in the league, seeing him close in on a potential call-up to the Netherlands national team.

With six yellow cards and one red card in 28 league appearances, some of his rash challenges have raised some eyebrows, but many believe he would still be able to offer more than Alvarez on the pitch.

Considering this, it could just be a matter of time until Alvarez’s time in East London comes to an end, even with his current deal expiring in June 2028.
