West Ham told to take January transfer ‘gamble’, their owners are ‘worried’ amid relegation fears

West Ham are in a desperate situation heading into the January transfer window following their poor form this season.

West Ham were beaten 1-0 by Fulham on Saturday (27 December), with Raul Jimenez’s late goal leaving the Hammers five points from safety in the Premier League relegation zone.

Nuno Espirito Santo has faced sack calls from West Ham fans after failing to turn the club’s fortunes around since arriving at the London Stadium.

The Portuguese boss has claimed just two victories in his 13 games in charge since replacing Graham Potter in September.

West Ham’s hierarchy now have a decision to make over their approach to the upcoming January transfer window.

West Ham face £60m blow after devastating twist

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the Hammers’ owners will be “worried” about the threat of relegation.

West Ham could lose more than £60million in revenue if they are unable to avoid the drop this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “Well, if you look at that league table, you’d have to be really worried if you were not just West Ham fans, but West Ham owners.

“It’s not a club set up for the Championship. The stadium has got 60,000 fans. It’s not going to look great with 25,000 fans.

“You’ve got a very disengaged fanbase at the moment. You’ve got a team with some good players, but they’re really underperforming. You’ve changed the manager already.”

West Ham told how many points they need to avoid relegation

Borson insisted West Ham have to “gamble” in January as they look to close the gap on the sides above them.

“I think you look at it in January, you say you’ve got to try and you’ve got to gamble on trying to get a couple of players in that’s going to try and make a difference, but I think it’s hard because they’re quite a long way back,” said Borson.

“Obviously, they’re not Wolves, but on 13 points, what do they need? Maybe 36. That’s 23 points from 20 games.

“I mean, it’s obviously very doable, but I think what would be equally concerning for them is just the number of candidates around that they can finish above.”

West Ham’s next fixture sees them take on Brighton in a must-win clash at the London Stadium on Tuesday (30 December).
