‘West Ham update as Jonathan David’s Italy move hits block’

West Ham remain interested in Jonathan David with his future still undecided this summer after a move to Italy ran into trouble.

The Hammers will need to boost their attacking options this summer, following a hugely underwhelming 2024/25 campaign.

Michail Antonio could be set to leave West Ham with his contract due to expire, while Nicolas Fullkrug’s first season with the club was far from prolific.

In the lead-up to the summer transfer window, David has been one striker to attract plenty of attention following his prolific form for Lille, and availability on a free transfer due to his expiring contract.

West Ham frustrations over Jonathan David to continue

In the lead-up to the summer transfer window, it was suggested that West Ham are preparing to make an offer for the signing of David in their search for more firepower.

However, Graham Potter‘s side looked as though they were set to miss out on a potential deal for the Canada international.

It had been suggested that David was set for a move to Serie A despite interest from the likes of West Ham, and while there may be a twist to that, it may not be enough for the Hammers.

According to a new update from The Telegraph, the 25-year-old’s potential move to Italy has hit a “stumbling block”, with Napoli boss Antonio Conte now prioritising Liverpool’s Dawin Nunez and Juventus showing interest but failing to secure an agreement.

It is therefore suggested that the door may once again have opened for a Premier League club to move for the Canadian.

However, while West Ham continue to rate David highly, they believe the striker wants to play Champions League football next season.

That would of course rule the London club out of the running for his signature after their 14th place finish in the Premier League last season.

Graham Potter to be concerned by transfer update

Football Insider Verdict

Having taken charge at the London Stadium back in January, Potter has so far struggled to really make a positive impact with the Hammers.

That has led to suggestions that Potter could be at risk of being sacked by West Ham even early on next season.

As a result, he undoubtedly needs reinforcements in the summer window, and David’s excellent goalscoring record would have provided him with a major boost.

The striker is one target who has the quality to get the goals needed to secure the wins that may have eased the pressure on Potter.

But with this signing seemingly still out of reach, it may be harder for West Ham to get those results that might keep their manager in a job.

With that in mind, Potter will be desperate to see the Hammers move quickly for alternative targets who can make a similar impact from the start of next season.
