Kenny makes 'huge' West Ham claim after Sky update on Zouma deal

West Ham would be better off splashing the cash on Kurt Zouma than taking a “huge gamble” on Nikola Malenkovic.

So says ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Hammers’ centre-back transfer dilemma.

Sky Sports reported on 9 August that West Ham are moving closer to agreeing a £14million deal for Fiorentina defender Milenkovic, 23.

It is claimed that they see him as a more realistic option after being priced out of a move for £25m-rated Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma.

Zouma’s contract at Stanford Bridge expires in 2023 while Milenkovic’s deal runs out next summer.

Kenny insists that Zouma, 26, represents these best option because of his sizable experience in the English top-flight.

“Zouma knows the Premier League and how it runs,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Getting someone for £14m can still be a big risk because that’s a massive amount of money. It’s a question of what they can afford.

“Do you go for someone who knows the league a little bit more or a foreigner for £10m less?

“He doesn’t know the league so West Ham are taking a huge gamble. With Zouma, you get that Premier League experience.

“He’s been around for a while now and he’s someone that you know what you’re gonna get from.”

Zouma featured 25 times for Chelsea in the top-flight last season and has made 165 Premier League appearances in total.

Milenkovic, a 28-cap Serbia international, turned out 34 times for Fiorentina in 2020-21.
