‘West Ham will push the boat out’ – Keeper signing expected in ‘£40m’ deal

West Ham United could be set to spend up to £40million on a new goalkeeper this summer.

Lukasz Fabianski left the Hammers at the end of last season, after the club didn’t offer the long-serving shot stopper a new contract.

It leaves the East London side with just two recognised senior keepers left in the squad, Alphonse Areola and Wes Foderingham.

Areola was shaky at times last season, and Foderingham was firmly third-choice, so Graham Potter will be desperate to reinforce the goalkeeping department before the end of the window.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that West Ham could spend up to £40million on a new man between the sticks.

West Ham could move for Mads Hermansen

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that Mads Hermansen from Leicester would be a great addition for West Ham.

Last week (15 July), Football Insider exclusively revealed that the Foxes were willing to sell Hermansen, and he has since been linked with a move to the London Stadium.

Wyness added that despite being a smart signing, it wouldn’t be a move that would get Hammers supporters excited.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I know Leicester were relegated, but Hermansen was probably the jewel in the crown in terms of any valuation.

“They’ve already sold a few players last year, so I think he’s one that could cost £35m to £40m, which is quite a lot, but I do think he’s a talent.

“I think West Ham will try and push the boat out. Areola’s been there a long time now, and Potter wants a new keeper. I think that’s a move that could get done, but the fans never get excited about a new keeper coming in.”

West Ham set for double signing

Meanwhile, as well as a goalkeeper, West Ham are working on two more new signings despite being restricted by financial regulations, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hammers have had a difficult summer so far, and money is tight due to the need to abide by Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Sources say that despite the financial situation, West Ham are moving to add a striker to their ranks.

Furthermore, Potter’s side are eager to bring in a replacement for Kudus, who joined Tottenham earlier this month (10 July).
