West Ham work on centre-back signing as medical begins – sources
West Ham are in the transfer market for a new central defender to replace Kurt Zouma, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the Irons are “desperate” to bring in another centre back before the 31st August cut-off.
Zouma is currently in the process of moving to Al-Ahli, although reports have claimed an issue arose during his medical.
Last season’s club captain is still expected to depart West Ham in this window, and Julen Lopetegui now wants a replacement.
Zouma was a big earner at the London Stadium, and his sale is expected to help balance the books for the Hammers.
West Ham will be looking to reinvest that money moving forward to provide further options ahead of the new season.
West Ham will have a big hole to replace by Kurt Zouma’s departure
The 29-year-old was entering the final year of his contract at West Ham, with the Premier League side opting to cash in on him this summer.
After making 103 appearances in all competitions for the Irons, Zouma has been a key member of the squad since he joined from Chelsea in 2021.
Zouma played in 33 of West Ham’s Premier League games last season, leaving a big hole behind for the club to replace.
The Hammers have already signed Max Kilman from Wolves for £million, but they will want another defender in this window.

At the other end of the field, West Ham’s deal with Aston Villa for Jhon Duran has collapsed.
