Noel Whelan drooled over Ben White after his “outstanding” Leeds United debut in Sunday’s 3-1 Championship win against Bristol City.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker, who was on punditry duty at Ashton Gate, explained how impressed he was by the on-loan defender.
White paired up with skipper Liam Cooper in the centre of a Leeds defence shorn of Pontus Jansson following his controversial summer transfer to Brentford.
The 21-year-old, who is at United on a season-long loan from Brighton, delivered an assured display on what was his first match in the Championship.
“I was really pleased with his performance, he was excellent” Whelan told Football Insider. “What a player he’s going to be. He handled himself really well and looked really mature.
“There is pressure on him, with people comparing him to Pontus Jansson and joining such a big club where he’s under the microscope. People will stop talking about Jansson pretty quickly if he keeps playing like that.
“Ben White has not played at this level before but showed he’s more than capable. His composure on the ball, distribution, pace and dominance in the air all bode really well. He looked really good alongside Cooper.”
White was given the nod to start in central defence ahead of Gaetano Berardi, who failed to make the substitute’s bench.
