'What a signing that would be' - Exclusive: Bent reacts to 'Brilliant' Villa transfer report
Darren Bent insists that Daniel Sturridge could be a “brilliant signing” for Aston Villa if he can prove his ability to stay injury-free.
The former Aston Villa and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, says that the 30-year-old’s fitness record is the only question mark over whether he would be a success for Dean Smith’s men.
The Daily Mail report that the Villans are joined by French outfit Olympique Marseille in weighing up a move for the England international after both showed interest in his signing last summer.
Bent says that if Sturridge can prove his fitness as Andy Carroll has done at Newcastle United then he could be a wonderful addition to the Villa squad.
Bent told Football Insider: “If he can stay fit then yeah, he’d be a brilliant signing but he’s got to be able to stay fit.
“As Andy Carroll is showing at Newcastle that he can stay fit, he’s getting a run of games and he’s looking like he’s getting back to his old self, that’s a positive.

“It’s whether Daniel Sturridge, in his head, he can get himself right and be fit. If he can get himself fit and stay fit, then what a signing that would be for Aston Villa.”
Villa were dealt a crushing injury blow in their first game of 2020, summer signing and first-choice striker Wesley ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.
His absence means Jonathan Kodjia is the only senior centre-forward at Smith’s disposal heading into the second half of the season.
In other Aston Villa news, Alan Hutton has had his say on a dressing room reveal from Dean Smith.
