What Danny Rohl has already said about Josh Windass amid Rangers transfer latest

Danny Rohl spoke highly of Josh Windass’ quality and leadership during their time together at Sheffield Wednesday as he now aims to reunite with him at Rangers.

Rohl and Windass worked together at Sheffield Wednesday for over a year and a half following the former’s appointment as their manager in October 2023.

Windass scored seven times in 28 games in their first campaign at Hillsborough, while he notched 13 goals and six assists in 47 appearances last season as they avoided the drop on both occasions.

New reports have stated that Rohl wants Windass to join him at Rangers as he eyes new additions to his attacking ranks in the January window.

The 31-year-old, who now plies his trade at Wrexham, is believed to be his former manager’s top winter target, and that should come as little surprise considering how much Rohl is known to think of him as a player and character.

What Rohl has previously said about Windass as Rangers reunion touted

A return to Ibrox could appeal to Windass, after he previously featured 73 times for Rangers between 2016 and 2018.

He is in fine form in the Championship right now, with six goals and three assists in 19 games for newly-promoted Wrexham, yet could jump at the chance to reunite with Rohl north of the border.

The German boss desperately needs new signings as his side falters on all fronts this season, with Windass targeted due to his versatility and experience of Scottish football.

Rohl spoke highly of Windass during their time together at Wednesday, with the attacker clearly making an immediate impact in the weeks after his appointment as he praised him as a “great player” who has “good movement between the lines” in November 2023.

As well as that, he also praised him in April 2024 after he scored a fine goal against Blackburn Rovers, when he said: “For Josh the last weeks have not been easy, he had a big injury and again, I told him he must take responsibility.

If you want to be a big player and a strong leader on the pitch then you must also take responsibility and show up, it makes no sense just to talk. He did this.

“He delivered, he fought for every inch and this was important, he showed his quality. With this performance from everybody we can go in the last two games.”

Windass enjoyed playing under Rohl at Wednesday – ‘Best coach I’ve ever had’

Windass liked Rohl’s Wednesday exit announcement in the summer, despite already having left the club, highlighting the clear mutual respect that the pair share.

The 31-year-old’s joy at working with the German boss was made obvious after he revealed how much he had been enjoying his short time playing under him in January 2024, saying: “He’s not really spoken to me individually that much, but the way he sees football and coaches football is the way I see it.

“He’s the best coach I’ve ever had by far and the way he sees football and explains it with Henrik (Pedersen) and the staff, I think they’re unbelievable to be honest at what they do.

Even when he spent some time out of the team last September, Windass still had praise for Rohl, as he said: “The gaffer knew that I was not happy with it, but I trained really well. I showed him that I wasn’t happy.

“We have got the best manager I have had for a long time, so I am never going to question his decisions, although sometimes you are not happy with what he does. We know that we have got a very good manager.”

It is clear that the pair enjoy working with each other in equal measure, which can only be a positive for Rangers fans ahead of a potential Ibrox return for Windass in January.
