What Newcastle fans chanted at Marc Cucurella during Chelsea clash

Newcastle fans compared Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella to their fellow long-haired club hero Fabricio Coloccini during their 2-2 draw on Saturday.

Cucurella has built a reputation as a divisive figure among opposition fans over the years, and he is certainly not afraid to rub people up the wrong way to get what he wants on the pitch.

He started for Chelsea at left-back on Tyneside on Saturday, but allowed Jacob Murphy to cross for Anthony Gordon to set up Nick Woltemade for Newcastle‘s opener in the fourth minute.

He struggled to contain Murphy all afternoon as his side clawed a 2-2 draw back from being 2-0 down, with doubts still lingering around Enzo Maresca’s future in charge of the Blues.

Cucurella unsurprisingly did not endear himself to the St James’ Park faithful throughout the encounter, with the home fans letting him know what they thought of him with a funny chant.

Newcastle fans tell Cucurella that they prefer his lookalike Coloccini

Cucurella’s hair has made him one of the most recognisable players in the Premier League, and it has also caused controversy after PSG’s Joao Neves was sent off for pulling the Spaniard’s locks in the Club World Cup.

Newcastle fans are no strangers to such a hairstyle, with former captain Coloccini sporting a similar look throughout his eight-year spell at the club between 2008 and 2016.

As a result, the Magpies’ supporters responded with an inventive chant to an incident in the 18th minute that saw Cucurella scream for a goal-kick after clashing with Sandro Tonali.

The song rang out a few times afterwards, and it may well become a running theme of games between these two sides in the years to come, if Cucurella remains at Stamford Bridge.

Coloccini is a Newcastle hero for his eight-year spell on Tyneside

It comes as little surprise to see Coloccini’s name still ringing out on the terraces at St James’ Park, considering the impact he had on the club in his eight years there.

The Argentine centre-back made 275 appearances for the Magpies and was their captain from 2011 to when he left in 2016.

He was named in the Premier League Team of the Season for helping them to a fifth-placed finish in 2011-12, while he also won the club’s Player of the Year award in 2010-11.
