Whelan blasts Celtic 'schoolboy' after Postecoglou 'dig'
Noel Whelan has claimed Ange Postecoglou has taken a “dig” at his Celtic defenders after their “schoolboy” display against Bayer Leverkusen.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Hoops could not expect to win any game of football with the standard of defending shown in Germany.
Speaking after the 3-2 defeat, as quoted by the Scottish Sun (25th November), Postecoglou confessed “we’re not at this level yet” and that his side “lost composure”.
Celtic let a 2-1 lead slip in the final 10 minutes against Leverkusen to end their hopes of qualifying for the Europa League knock-out stages.
Whelan admitted Postecoglou had been “very honest” in his assessment.
The English pundit told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s a very honest assessment from him. A bit of a dig to the players that are there.

“If you’re going to compete in Europe, you’ve got to bring your A-game. They didn’t. You can’t defend like that and expect to win any game of football.
“Even though you’ve scored two away from home, you’ve got to be better than that. You’ve got to be more clued up, more disciplined and you’ve got to know what Europe’s all about.
“Unfortunately, again, it is schoolboy defending, they are sloppy goals. That’s a lack of concentration and discipline on marking and that desire to keep clean sheets.
“Unfortunately, they look like they’re going to have to go and score three to win most games each week. You can’t do that.”
Postecoglou started with a back-four of Josip Juranovic, Stephen Welsh, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anthony Ralston.
The Australian manager also has the likes of Carl Starfelt, Christopher Jullien and Greg Taylor to come back from injury.
