Whelan can’t believe Charlie Cresswell’s Leeds deal could be terminated

Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United should not recall Charlie Creswell from his Millwall loan despite him “excelling” in the Championship.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old’s time at The Den is a “very valuable part” of his “football education”.

It has been widely reported that Leeds United will have the opportunity to bring Cresswell back to Elland Road in January if they activate his recall clause.

Cresswell has made 15 appearances for Millwall this term and has started the last four games after temporarily losing his place in Gary Rowett’s side.

Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton is also on loan at The Den and has played 17 times in the second tier this term.

Cresswell, who has accrued six caps for England’s Under-21 side, was included in the Championship’s Team of the Month for November.

His Elland Road contract expires in June 2025.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’ll be left out on loan at Millwall.

“He’s bedded in there, he’s learning his trade – he’s getting more 90-minute outings under his belt.

“The Championship is such a tough, competitive division, and the progression he’s showing is a really good sign for Leeds United.

“It would be a shame to call him back, even if he is excelling.

“We’ve got four good senior options to call on in the senior squad, so there’s no use in disrupting a very valuable part of a youngsters’ football education.”
