Noel Whelan has claimed Ezgjan Alioski is a “big worry” in Leeds United’s defence because he can be a defensive “liability”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward explained why he is concerned about the Macedonia international being the first choice left-back.
Barry Douglas started the first three league matches of the season for Marcelo Bielsa’s side before injury handed Alioski a chance.
The converted winger, 27, has started the last four Championship matches for the promotion hopefuls but Whelan believes the alarm bells are ringing after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Barnsley.
“His defending at time is very lacking in quality, he can be a liability,” Whelan told Football Insider. “Alioski is a 100 per center who will run all day but, when it comes to defending, he goes to ground and sells himself too often.
“Good defenders stay on their feet. Three times against Barnsley, he slid in to tackle, ended on the ground and was out of the game.
“He needs to learn if he wants to play in that position and stay in the side. It’s a big worry for Leeds if he doesn’t learn from his mistakes.”
Alioski has been a key player for Leeds since signing in 2017, but most of his 99 appearances for the club have come in wide attacking roles.
In other Leeds United news, the club feel they have “dropped a clanger” over player summer sale.
