Noel Whelan has claimed it’s a “make or break” season at Leeds United for Barry Douglas.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed the Scotland international has yet to come close to reproducing his Wolves form at Elland Road.
Douglas was widely hailed as an outstanding signing when he was prised from Wolves for £3million in the summer of 2018 after playing a key role in their promotion campaign.
But the left-back has not reached the same heights at Leeds and is now the second choice behind converted winger Ezgjan Alioski.
“Barry Douglas is running out of time at Leeds,” Whelan told Football Insider. “This season is make or break for him. We haven’t seen the best of him in a Leeds shirt, he will be the first to admit that.
“I’m surprised and disappointed in him. I thought he was fantastic at Wolves two seasons ago in their promotion campaign, and I expected him to be a big player for Leeds.
“It’s not the Barry Douglas we thought we were getting. Yes, there have been injuries along the way, but the fans and myself were expecting more.
“We know he is a great full-back but we haven’t seen the player who was so good for Wolves.”
Douglas has made just three Championship starts among his six appearance for Leeds this season.
He has played 32 matches since signing from Wolves and featured for the Under-23s yesterday in a clear indication he will be on the bench against West Brom tonight.
