Whelan claims Leeds set for Raphinha boost after what he’s seen
Noel Whelan has insisted Leeds United will be boosted by Raphinha’s international exploits during the Premier League break.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and club ambassador claimed the 25-year-old would return to Elland Road “a much better player” after featuring for Brazil.
Raphinha picked up his sixth cap on Thursday in a 1-1 draw against Ecuador.
He could face Paraguay next Wednesday (2 February) before returning to Leeds.
The rest of the Whites squad have a break before the Whites visit Aston Villa on February 9.
Whelan insisted Raphinha’s time away with Brazil would be a help, not a hindrance, to Leeds.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s one of these players that’s naturally fit and enjoys playing the game. I’ve seen that every time he steps out on the field whether it’s for Leeds United or for Brazil.
“I think because he’s only just got into the Brazil squad that he sees every opportunity as a gift. It’s not easy to get in any international squad, let alone the Brazil one when you’re playing alongside fantastic, world-class players.
“I think this does his confidence the world of good. I think he needs these sort of games with the national side.
“He’ll come back at a much better player again. I don’t see it as a hindrance, I don’t see it as a problem. I only see it as a plus when he goes away and plays for Brazil.”

Raphinha has been a standout performer for Leeds this season.
He has netted eight goals in 19 Premier League appearances to top the club’s goalscoring charts.
