Kemar Roofe is set to be omitted from the Leeds United starting XI for their Championship showdown against Sheffield Wednesday today (SATURDAY), according to Noel Whelan.
United’s leading scorer has had to be content with a place on the substitute’s bench for the last two games after recovering from a knee injury sustained in mid-February.
Patrick Bamford has spearheaded the attack over the last two months and scored twice in the midweek win over Preston North End, with Roofe coming off the bench in the final minutes.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Leeds striker Whelan, who will be at Elland Road for this evening’s 5.30pm kick-off, expects Marcelo Bielsa to pick an unchanged XI barring any late injuries.
“Bielsa won’t change the side,” Whelan said. “It’s not about rotation with him. He only makes alterations if they’re enforced by injury or suspension. He keeps faith with his beliefs, methods and the players who respond to him.
“That’s unfortunate for Roofe, who has been fantastic this season. But he still has a big part to play. He has been a massive figure this season an there will be a time when he will be needed to change the game.
“He needs to be ready to be the superstar and the hero.”
Roofe tops Leeds’ scoring charts with 14 goals this season, all of which have been struck in Championship matches.
United are second in the league, one place ahead of Sheffield United in third, ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures.
In other Leeds United transfer news, Noel Whelan has slaughtered SEVEN of the club’s senior players as “not talented enough” and who must be “got off the payroll”.
