Whelan: Forshaw could be set for ‘big role’ amid ‘soul-shattering’ Leeds verdict

Adam Forshaw could play a “big role” for Leeds United this season but expectations must be managed given the length of time he’s been out.

That is the view of Whites ambassador Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Marcelo Bielsa’s latest update on the 29-year-old’s fitness.

As quoted by Leeds Live (August 19th), Bielsa heaped praise on Forshaw and claimed the club are unable to buy a player of his quality in the current transfer market.

The Leeds boss suggested the centre-midfielder would not be reintroduced into the first team until he is capable of playing two games in a week.

Forshaw is currently working with Mark Jackson’s Under-23s and played the full 90 minutes of their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace last week.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Russell Edge for his assessment of Forhsaw’s first team prospects, Whelan said:

“Everyone is hoping that he can play a big role this season. He has been very much missed and thought of while he’s been out.

“It is a game of patience when you get a long-term injury like he has. They have to make sure that the player is right because the last thing Adam Forshaw wants is another breakdown.

“It’s not nice when you are out and watching your teammates play every week. It is soul-shattering, I’ve been there.

“It is about patience and making sure he is 100 per cent. You also need patience with his performances after because when you are out two years it is going to take some time to get back to your best.

“Let’s hope he can get back to his best because we know what he can produce.”
