Noel Whelan is convinced Leeds United have already completed the “best business we will do this summer” by keeping hold of Marcelo Bielsa for another season.
The Championship giants announced earlier this week they had triggered an option to extend the manager’s contract by another 12 months following extensive discussions.
It means Bielsa will have another crack at promotion after overseeing a dramatic improvement in his first campaign which ended in a third-place league finish and play-off heartache.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-United striker Whelan is in no doubt about the importance of the Argentine returning to Elland Road for a second campaign.
“It looks the best business we will do this summer,” he said. “If you are not going to be spending on players, this looks the best signing we could possibly make.
“The manager was so important last season. He transformed the team by implementing a fluent and aggressive style that the players bought into, and many of them had the best season of their careers.
“Mr Bielsa got them organised, drilled and left no stone unturned in terms of preparation and planning. He’s a brilliant manager and we’re lucky to have him.”
The Argentine, 63, is not only the best paid manager in the Championship, but he also has a considerable backroom staff who are also on high salaries in comparison to other second-tier clubs.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that the club have been told it will cost £6.2million to seal attacker deal as talks set to begin.
