Noel Whelan has told Football Insider he’s heard there’s been a £12million bid for Leeds United winger Jack Clarke.
The ex-United striker, who covers all of the club’s matches as a pundit, explained that Tottenham have upped the ante in a move to land the 18-year-old wonderkid.
Football Insider broke the news last week that Tottenham have tabled a second bid of £8million for Clarke during what have been extensive talks between the two clubs.
Now, with Clarke set to tell Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds chiefs he wants to join the north Londoners this summer, Whelan has claimed Spurs have intensified their attempts to land the Elland Road academy product.
“We know we could be losing Jack Clarke, and there are offers there,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I’m hearing that we want £20m but they’re offering £12million with add-ons.
“That make it seem a lot less attractive. In another season, he could be worth more than £20million if he is playing regularly and doing well. I think it would be a little bit desperate to sell him for £8million plus £4million of add-ons.
“That would only be £8million guaranteed, which would not go far in the Championship. We may as well hold on to him if Tottenham are not going to offer more than that.”
Whelan called for Leeds to stick it out in negotiations with last season’s Champions League runners-up and demand a significantly higher guaranteed figure for Clarke.
“If it’s £13million straight up, that would make a difference as you could bring in three quality players to the club,” the ex-striker added to Football Insider. “That could make a real difference to Bielsa and the quality of player he could bring in.”
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that a Whites fans favourite wanted by Premier League clubs is set to tell Marcelo Bielsa this week that he wants to quit.
