Whelan: I know from Leeds why Arsenal are signing 'perfect' player in Ben White
Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign “the perfect modern day centre-half” in Ben White, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 23-year-old could even be the next Tony Adams or Martin Keown.
As reported by Sky Sports (19th July), the Gunners have agreed a £50million deal with Brighton for the centre-half.
It comes after bids of £40million and £47million were rejected by the Seagulls earlier in the window.
White has three years remaining on his contract with Graham Potter’s side.
Whelan, who commentated BBC Radio Leeds on all of White’s fixtures in the 2019-20 campaign, recalled the moment he realised the Englishman was destined for the top.

“Arsenal have never recovered from losing Adams, Keown and Bould,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “I don’t think they ever replaced them really.
“They have signed a lot of great ball players and a lot of great attackers but they have struggled defensively for a long time now.
“Under Arteta they are rebuilding from the back. Their backline was lacking in pace last season, well they have sorted that now with Ben White.
” £50million for a young player like Ben White? I’m sure he will pay them back handsomely.
“Midway through his season at Leeds I realised he is the perfect modern day centre-half. He is exactly what every club searches for. He is good on the ball, good in the air, quick and really intelligent. There is no doubt about his credentials.”
