Whelan in 'no doubt' about Jacob Ramsey as new Aston Villa details emerge - 'he's the one'

Noel Whelan has claimed Aston Villa should look to build their side around “impressive” talent Jacob Ramsey after his display against Man United on Sunday (6 November).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed new boss Unai Emery will be key to helping the 21-year-old realise his lofty potential at Villa Park.

Ramsey grabbed a goal and an assist as Emery registered a 3-1 win over Man United in his first game in charge on Sunday.

In addition to his output at the sharp end of the pitch, the England Under-21 international won eight of his 10 ground duels and won more tackles (six) than any other player on the pitch (as per Sofascore).

Ramsey, who registered six goals and one assist in his breakthrough season in 2021-22, has played in each of Aston Villa’s 14 Premier League games this term.

Whelan insisted the academy graduate is a “must-start” for new boss Emery.

When asked if Ramsey is a talent worth building around at Aston Villa, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely no doubt.

“Last season he really burst onto the scene with his energy, his strength on the ball – but his finishing capabilities are so impressive.

“His energy, his reading of the game, his intelligence for such a young player – he’s so important for Aston Villa.

“He is the one player who is a must-start. He can not only score goals but assist and get involved.

“Keep him in there, keep him fit. Emery has come in with a lot of experience and know-how, and he can put his arm around Ramsey and help him realise that potential.”
