Leeds United are in “desperate” need of a new left-back and Nicolás Tagliafico fits the bill perfectly, according to Noel Whelan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites striker and boyhood Elland Road fan claimed the 28-year-old’s experience and Champions League pedigree make him an ideal signing for Marcelo Bielsa.
The Mirror report the Yorkshire giants are working on an ambitious deal for the Ajax defender.
Tagliafico has featured in 38 games for Ajax across all competitions this season, including playing every minute of their Champions League campaign.
“We’re in desperate need of a full-back, a left wing-back and he seems to have the credentials that will fit straight into Leeds United,” Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge.
“An international with Champions League experience, we need that.
“We know he’d be coming from a club that plays a similar way to Leeds. The ball on the deck get forward, read the game well.
“Everything’s got to fit into Marcelo’s criteria. That includes fitness, the mental side to it and a character that’s going to add to the squad not just on the field but in the group of players.
“Everything’s got to tick a box for Marcelo and that’s the difficulty.
“We might just need that experience at the back as well. That would help the likes of Pascal Struijk who’s 21 and others along that backline.
“He will make sure that this player’s right and can adapt to the Premier League quickly and more so to the squad and our style of play, our style of football.”
